More about the coffee, producer & region.
Shyam, a third-generation owner of the property, has expertise in improving plant health and yield, which includes replanting of old Arabicas with new selections under drip and overhead irrigation. The ripe berries are selectively handpicked by a team of trained women who have been on the property since Shyam’s parents’ time. The harvested crop is carefully picked over to remove any unripe fruits.
About the Region
Nestled in the lush green hills of Kodagu district in Karnataka state of India, Komala estate, owned by Shyam Ponnappa, has the ideal agroclimatic and topographic conditions for cultivation of Arabica coffees. The area is in temperate zone of the country experiencing four distinct seasons.
About the Process
To sustain economic growth, under increasing input and labour costs, some blocks of old Arabica were replanted with high-yielding Robusta since 2017. The ripe berries are selectively handpicked by a team of trained women who have been on the property since Shyam's parents' time. The harvested crop is carefully picked over to remove any unripe fruits. To improve processing efficiency and quality, a new pulping and washing unit with fermenting facility were installed in 2014. The processed wet crop is then sun dried on concrete barbecue under conducive temperatures, and the dried crop for dispatch is stored in gunny bags under a well-ventilated area. The estate also produces good quality arabica and robusta naturals in micro lots.
