About the Coffee
This coffee is sourced from smallholder farmers across Papua New Guinea's Simbu Province, where coffee cultivation is woven into everyday life. Many families grow coffee on small plots surrounding their homes, carefully tending each harvest using traditional farming methods passed down through generations.
The region's remote landscape and relatively low-input farming practices allow the coffee to develop naturally, producing coffees renowned for their sweetness, clarity and distinctive regional character. Every harvest reflects the dedication and experience of the farming communities that make Papua New Guinea one of speciality coffee's most exciting origins.
The Region
Situated deep within Papua New Guinea's central highlands, Simbu Province is one of the country's most respected coffee-growing regions. High elevations, cool mountain temperatures, fertile soils and reliable rainfall create ideal conditions for producing exceptional speciality coffee.
The slower ripening of the cherries at altitude encourages greater sweetness and complexity, resulting in coffees that are well balanced, clean and full of flavour. Simbu has earned a reputation for producing coffees with remarkable consistency, making it a favourite among coffee roasters around the world.
The Washed Process
Only ripe cherries are selected before being pulped and fermented to remove the remaining fruit from the bean. After fermentation, the coffee is thoroughly washed with clean water before being carefully dried until it reaches the ideal moisture content for export.
This washed process highlights the coffee's natural sweetness while enhancing clarity and balance in the cup, allowing the rich chocolate, nutty notes and smooth toffee finish to shine through.
The Arusha Varietal
This lot is produced entirely from the Arusha varietal, a fascinating coffee believed to belong to the Typica family. While relatively uncommon, Arusha has become highly regarded for its excellent cup quality, combining sweetness, elegant acidity and impressive complexity.
Its exact origins remain something of a mystery, but in Papua New Guinea it has become known for producing beautifully clean, expressive coffees that perfectly showcase the country's unique growing conditions.
If you're looking for a smooth, chocolate-forward speciality coffee with plenty of sweetness and balance, Papua New Guinea Simbu is an excellent choice - easy to enjoy, yet full of the unique character that makes coffees from this origin so memorable.
